The name Malva derives from the verb ‘mollire’ = ‘to soften’, because of the emollient and smoothing properties. Its activities are mainly attributable to the mucilages that have the ability to absorb water by swelling and thus can protect throat and stomach against irritations (es. dry cough). It can also be used to relieve mild gut discomfort, favouring gut regularity . Mucilages also act as protective of the skin tissue: its external use has soothing, anti-inflammatory, anti-itching properties.
